Disclosure and barring checks
The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) provides criminal record checks and handles barring decisions under the law that applies to its work. An employer may ask for a check when recruiting for an eligible role.
Before you apply
The employer or responsible organisation should explain which check is needed and why the role is eligible. The application process may require proof of identity and details of previous names.
If you need help providing evidence or using the application, ask the organisation managing the check.
When you receive your certificate
Check the information on the certificate. An employer may ask to see it as part of recruitment. The employer makes the employment decision after considering the information relevant to the job.
Correct a mistake
If information on the certificate is wrong, use the DBS dispute and correction process. Include the certificate reference and identify the information you believe is inaccurate. The responsible record holder may need to check the information.
A complaint about a delay or poor service is handled separately from a certificate dispute.
Barring decisions
If you receive a notice about a barring decision, follow the instructions in the notice for representations, review or appeal. These are different from correcting a disclosure certificate.
