About us
The General Register Office administers civil registration and status records within its legal remit and supports the Registrar General in maintaining the integrity, standards and lawful administration of the civil-registration system.
Responsibilities
The General Register Office administers civil registration and status records within its legal remit. It maintains the records and registration processes assigned to it, supports consistent registration standards, protects registration integrity and provides lawful access to registration information and records where the applicable rules permit.
The Registrar General is responsible for the integrity and administration of the civil-registration system. The General Register Office works with other Interior bodies where civil-registration information is relevant to an authorised status or identity process, but civil registration is distinct from immigration decision-making, membership status and passport issuance.
Records and access
Registration records are handled under the applicable rules for accuracy, retention, access, correction, confidentiality and official information. Public access or certificate services are provided only through the authorised route and do not expose protected records merely because the underlying service operates digitally.
