We support civil servants and public service leaders to develop the skills, knowledge and professional capability they need to serve the public.
Who we are
Government Skills brings together the central Cabinet Office teams responsible for Civil Service learning, skills and professional development. We are part of Government People Group and work with departments and professions across government.
Training for civil servants
We are responsible for the common Civil Service learning offer and curriculum, including the standards used to develop and assess learning. We work with departments and professional functions to identify learning needs, develop training and support the quality of learning across government.
Our work covers the knowledge and capabilities needed for effective public administration, professional practice and leadership. Departments remain responsible for identifying the development needs of their staff and for the training arrangements within their own organisations.
Fast Stream and development schemes
Government Skills supports learning and development within cross-government talent and development arrangements. We work with Government People Group’s recruitment and talent teams, including those responsible for the Civil Service Fast Stream.
Recruitment, selection and appointment remain the responsibility of the relevant Civil Service recruitment authorities.
Public service leaders
We support leadership and management development for senior officials and future leaders across the Civil Service and wider public service.
The Leadership College for Government is part of Government Skills. It provides specialist leadership and management development to help public service leaders carry out their responsibilities.
