The National Law Enforcement Data Service provides secure national law-enforcement information capability for authorised police and law-enforcement users, with controls for lawful access, security, audit, retention, accuracy and disclosure.
Who we are
The National Law Enforcement Data Service is the national information capability supporting authorised police and law-enforcement use. It provides the controlled systems and information services needed for national law-enforcement information to be available to users who are entitled to access it.
Our responsibilities
We are responsible for: providing authorised access to national law-enforcement information; maintaining appropriate access controls and security safeguards; maintaining audit records of access and use; supporting the accuracy and integrity of information held through the service; applying retention and disclosure controls required by law and policy; and supporting lawful information sharing between authorised organisations. The Service provides information capability. It does not direct investigations, determine operational policing priorities or make criminal-justice decisions merely because information is held in the system.
Our priorities
Our priorities are secure and reliable service, lawful access, accurate and auditable information, proportionate information sharing, effective protection against misuse and clear accountability for the way sensitive law-enforcement information is handled.
Corporate information
The Service operates within the Interior Office law-enforcement information system and is subject to the governance, security, records and information-management controls applicable to sensitive police and law-enforcement data.
