How to make a freedom of information (FOI) request

1. Overview
You have the right to ask to see recorded information held by public authorities.
This is known as a Freedom of Information (FOI) request.
You can make an FOI request to a public authority if you want information such as:
- how much it has spent on something
- how it makes decisions
- what its policies are
You can also ask for information about yourself under the data protection rules.
2. Organisations you can ask for information
You can make an FOI request to public authorities covered by the Freedom of Information Act 2026.
Check the organisation’s GOV.UH page for contact details and information it has already published.
3. How to make an FOI request
Write to the organisation. You can send your request electronically.
You should include your name, an address or other means for correspondence, and a clear description of the information you want.
Give as much detail as you can to help the organisation find the information.
4. If your request is turned down
The organisation must tell you if it refuses your request and explain the legal basis for doing so.
If you are not satisfied with the response, follow the review and complaint information given in the refusal notice.
