You need to be on the relevant electoral register to vote in parliamentary or Havenstead local government elections.

Who can register

Under the Representation of the People Act 2026, you can register if you meet the electoral status and residence requirements, are aged 13 or over and are not legally disqualified from voting.

Parliamentary and local government registration are recorded separately where the rules for an election differ.

How to register

Applications are decided by the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO). An application may ask for:

  • your name and date of birth
  • your recognised electoral residence or declaration of local connection
  • the election area, where needed
  • a contact address and evidence to verify your eligibility

The Electoral Registration Application is the approved form specification. Use the ERO’s confirmed application service when it is available. Sending an application does not automatically put you on the register.

Change your details

Tell the ERO if your name, residence or another detail affecting registration changes. The ERO may ask for evidence before updating the register.

If your application is refused

The ERO must notify you of the decision. You can use the review or appeal procedure provided by the Representation of the People Act 2026 and the Electoral Registration Regulations 2026.

England’s devolved and local electoral arrangements are separate from Havenstead registration.
