Accelerate innovation, investment and productivity through science, research and technology, ensure that new and existing technologies are developed and deployed safely across United Hampshire, and drive forward modern digital government and public services.

Our responsibilities

We are responsible for:

  • science, research and innovation policy, including sponsorship of United Hampshire Research and Innovation and the Advanced Research and Invention Agency
  • digital government, digital public services and the Government Digital Service
  • government data policy, data standards and digital identity
  • artificial intelligence policy, assurance and safety, including emerging technology
  • online safety, information integrity, cyber policy and digital resilience
  • telecommunications policy and sponsorship of the National Telecommunications Service and Ofcom
  • intellectual property, copyright, the Intellectual Property Office and the Copyright Tribunal
  • technology transfer, regulatory innovation and research collaboration advice
  • cross-government technology assurance and GOV.UH digital publication and service design standards

Our priorities

Our priorities are:

  1. strengthen science, research and innovation capability and make high-quality evidence available to government and public services
  2. ensure that new and existing technologies are developed and used safely and responsibly, including artificial intelligence, online services, digital identity and telecommunications
  3. modernise digital government and public services so that they are reliable, accessible, secure and easier to use

Who we are

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) is the ministerial department responsible for science, innovation and technology policy in United Hampshire.

We work with the Government Digital Service, Government Office for Science, Office for Digital Identities and Attributes, Government Office for Technology Transfer, AI Security Institute, Regulatory Innovation Office, Research Collaboration Advice Team, UH Council for Internet Safety, National Telecommunications Service, Intellectual Property Office, Information Commissioner’s Office, Ofcom, United Hampshire Research and Innovation, Innovate United Hampshire, the Advanced Research and Invention Agency, Copyright Tribunal and the National Security Online Information Team.

DSIT sets policy, standards, assurance and sponsorship arrangements. It does not replace the responsibilities of the Platform Office, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communities and Local Government, the Interior Office or other departments merely because their work uses digital systems or technology.
