About us

The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communities and Local Government is central to building and maintaining public infrastructure, strengthening communities, supporting local growth and ensuring local government can serve people effectively.

Responsibilities

We are responsible for:

  • infrastructure policy, planning, delivery and assurance
  • public buildings, public estate, operational estate and public places
  • roads, routes, maps, assets, maintenance, recovery and handover
  • infrastructure standards, protection and resilience
  • sponsorship and oversight of the National Infrastructure Service
  • community policy, cohesion, integration, belonging and local identity
  • neighbourhoods, local participation, community confidence and resilience
  • support for voluntary and civic activity
  • local-government policy and local authorities
  • strategic authorities, including the Steadfast & Hearth Combined Sphere Authority and Hampshire & Solent Combined County Authority where relevant to the settlement
  • local areas, wards, administrative geography and local-government boundaries
  • local democracy, accountability and local-government improvement
  • local growth, local centres and high streets
  • sponsorship of the Local Government Boundary Commission for Havenstead and Local Government Ombudsman for Havenstead

Priorities

Our priorities are to:

  1. deliver and maintain the infrastructure needed for functioning public services and communities
  2. strengthen neighbourhoods, community cohesion and local participation
  3. support capable, accountable and effective local government
  4. support local growth and resilient places
  5. maintain clear infrastructure standards, records, assurance and asset stewardship

Who we are

We are a ministerial department responsible for infrastructure, communities and local government.

Where infrastructure supports another public function, the responsible policy or operational authority defines the need, MICLG governs the infrastructure function, and the National Infrastructure Service delivers approved infrastructure. Specialist regulators retain their own regulatory responsibilities.
